New toolkits for research data management in the visual arts

The Centre for Digital Scholarship at the University for the Creative Arts has launched toolkits resulting from the VADS4R project. This project delivered a series of workshops on research data management in the visual arts at the University for the Creative Arts, Glasgow School of Art and Falmouth University, supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). Over 186 postgraduates and researchers participated in the project from universities across the UK, exploring the nature of ‘research data’ in the visual arts and sharing their practice and tips for its effective management.

The CDS have launched the first in a series of online toolkits and videos introducing research data management in the visual arts. The tools are:

GSA Library launches Creative Research mini-site

Glasgow School of Art Library has just launched its brand-new mini-site, 'Creative Research'.

"Discover how artists, writers and creative practitioners have used the collections of GSA Learning Resources to inspire, challenge or expand their practice. From interventions into our spaces, to installations amongst our shelves, our collections can be used to explore and challenge artistic, cultural and philosophical themes and

preoccupations.

'Creative Research' brings together a number of case studies, images and artist testimonies to explore how practitioners have used, played with, and deconstructed the Library's spaces and collections."

Call for proposals to host the engage Resource

engage is currently looking to re-house the engage Resource. The Resource is a collection of material about visual arts and gallery education dating from the 1970s to the present. Items are donated regularly by engage members and others in the sector. There are currently approximately 1200 items in the Resource, which is at present hosted by the Stuart Hall Library at Iniva.

engage is seeking an organisation to host the Resource which is able to:

• Grant access to the collection to the public, including engage’s members
• Catalogue the collection
• Present the Resource as a coherent body of material
• Take an active role in acquiring materials for the Resource
• Work with engage to promote the Resource and programme events which will complement it.

New online catalogue: UoG Art History Resource Centre

The University of Glasgow Art History Resource Centre has launched a new online catalogue using LibraryThing.


As an adjunct to the outstanding resources available within Glasgow University Library, the History of Art Resource and Postgraduate Centre serves the study needs of undergraduates, postgraduates, research and teaching staff within the School of Culture and Creative Arts.


The centre is administered by professional librarians who are always prepared to give advice and guidance on bibliographic matters or other resource requirements. They administer a collection of 4,500 books, selected periodical holdings, over 15,000 exhibition and gallery catalogues and over 82,000 teaching slides.

Edinburgh's "Capital Collections" website launches

The Capital Collections website has recently launched as an image library of Edinburgh City Libraries and Museums and Galleries. It contains "images of material from the collections of Edinburgh's City Libraries and Museums and Galleries. You can discover the historical and cultural life of Edinburgh, Scotland and the Scots through this growing image library which includes a wonderful selection of photographs, paintings, engravings and objects ranging from toys to ceramics, silverware and material from the history collections." Images are downloadable for personal/educational purposes, and some are also available to purchase.

JISC Advance - Digital Media and Copyright Seminar, London

"Do you use images from the internet in PowerPoint? Are you struggling to get your head around the rights of your digital collection? Are you embarking on producing your own digital media resources? JISC Digital Media in association with JISC Legal is hosting a brand new JISC Advance - Digital Media and Copyright Seminar to help disseminate information in order to help you protect your resources and your institution.

Use of digital media has fast become the norm in day-to-day work, and as a result awareness of copyright and other rights is key in taking care of your own works, as well as making sure you are not infringing the rights of others.

This seminar aims to offer practical approaches and considerations for using digital media in teaching and learning, digitising digital media and digital rights management. It is aimed at those working in developing institutional policy, disseminating copyright information to staff, and those working with digital media on a day-to-day basis.

The objectives are:

* To increase confidence in dealing with multi-layer intellectual property rights in digital media
* To identify appropriate approaches to dealing with the uncertainties of copyright law in relation to digital media
* To share experiences of both issues and solutions to IPR challenges in relation to digital media

Having listened to many of our users, we are running this event outside of Bristol, with a view to hosting it in various venues nationwide in the upcoming future.

The last 25 years of UK and world history told through news film and photo journalism

An unrivalled online image library, comprising over 500 hours of film and 56,000 photos, will be available free of charge to UK students and academics from Summer 2010.

Following £2.5 million in funding from JISC and a competitive procurement process, 11 high quality film and image collections have been licensed by JISC Collections for at least 25 years as part of the Digital Images for Education initiative.
