The ARLIS Education and Professional Development Committee has organised a visit to Scottish National Portrait Gallery Library and the National Museum of Scotland Research Library on Friday 23rd March 2012.

This is an opportunity to visit two recently refurbished research libraries in Edinburgh which have re-opened to the public. Time has been built-in between visits to allow you to enjoy lunch in one of Edinburgh’s many cafes/restaurants.

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery Library is the former library of the Society of Antiquaries and the focus of the collection is the history of Scotland and Scottish society, with particular strengths in biographies of Scots and Scottish portraiture.

The National Museum of Scotland Research Library is the largest museum library in Scotland. The collection reflects the strengths and variety of the Museums’ collections and research past and present and covers archaeology, decorative arts, Scottish history and culture, history of science and technology, military history, natural sciences, world cultures and museology.

To book a place on this visit please send your name and email address to Sarah Castle: s.castle@lcc.arts.ac.uk

Social Media Week Glasgow

News from EDINA:

Next week is Social Media Week Glasgow (#SMWgla) and EDINA and Edinburgh Beltane, Beacon for Public Engagement are jointly running an event, "Social Media & Academia Panel Session and Surgery" (#socac) which is taking place on Wednesday 21st September 2011 at University of Glasgow Library from 3.30 - 6pm.

The event will focus on the opportunities for using social media in academia, particularly for public engagement where collaboration and communicating research to wider audience can create greater social impact for your work. It is free to attend but registration (via:

http://socialmediaweek.org/event/?event_id=470 ) is essential.

Our panellists are social media enthusiasts using new technologies to engage their audiences in innovative ways:

- Dr Chris Speed, researcher in Digital Architecture, Human Geography and Social Computing, Edinburgh College of Art

- Jen Ross, Associate Lecturer on the MSc in E-Learning programme and part of the Digital Cultures and Education research group at the School of Education, University of Edinburgh.

- Dr Peter Matthews, lecturer in the School of the Built Environment, Heriot-Watt University

- William Nixon, Digital Library Development Manager at University of Glasgow

After the panel session there will be an informal social media surgery - an opportunity to ask more in depth questions, get specific advice or play with social media with lots of experienced people on hand.

The website includes further information and the link to register for the event:

http://socialmediaweek.org/event/?event_id=470

The event is free and open to all though it will be particularly useful for academic and support staff, researchers, library and information professionals, and post graduate students. If you are unable to attend in person please do join in the discussions online by keeping an eye on the #socac hashtag or the event page where we will be linking to live blogging and any images and audio of the event.

CILIPS North East Branch event

The next CILIPS North East Branch event (held jointly with Grampian

Information) will be 'By George she's got it - enhancing and improving

access through the migration of digital objects.' This presentation

will discuss the recent migration of the George Washington Wilson

photographic archive to the University of Aberdeen's digital asset

management software.

As one of Scotland's premier photographers George Washington Wilson and

his firm captured images not only of Aberdeen and the North East but

the whole of Scotland and most of England, as well as parts of Wales

and Northern Ireland, Gibraltar, Morocco, the South of Spain, and

(especially) colonial South Africa and Australia. Thousands of those

images are now available for all to see at http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk/.

The project has enhanced the level of detail visible in the images

themselves and the basic metadata created when the archive was first

digitised. This twilight session will include a look at images from the

collection as well as the crosswalks which have enabled us to increase

the granularity of our metadata while still allowing it to be harvested

in Dublin Core.

This free event will take place in the Seminar Room at the Queen Mother

Library on the University of Aberdeen's Old Aberdeen Campus (see

http://www.abdn.ac.uk/maps/old-aberdeen.php) at 16:00 on Tuesday

28 June 2011.
